River Krupa needs your help!

LET'S SAY "NO" TO HYDROPOWER PLANTS ON THE RIVER KRUPA!

Plans for construction of hydropower plants do not stop and are becoming a growing threat to this river. Only through the decision to permanently ban construction of hydropower plants on the river Krupa it can be preserved in its present state! Herewith we call on the Zadar County and the Ministry of Environment and Energy to make a joint decision, within their competencies, by which the canyon of the Krupa river will be excluded from all forms of use for energy purposes!

RIJEKA KRUPA

RIVER KRUPA

River Krupa, which is only 7 km long, has 19 travertine slopes, and is a tributary of river Zrmanja and an integral part of the Velebit Nature Park. Historically the waters of Krupa river were used to operate mills and to irrigate gardens, but to this day the small river managed to remain in a very well preserved condition, thus remaining one of the few free-flowing rivers in Croatia. The fact is that a hydropower plant in the canyon of the Krupa river would permanently damage and destroy the natural and landscape values of this river and that part of the Velebit Nature Park. Unfortunately, for many years now there has been an intention to use river Krupa waters in the production of electricity, which would lead to changes in water flow regime, regulation of river bed and banks, damming of the river, ruining of the travertine slopes, etc. Any type of construction would for sure have irreversible impacts on the river, its wildlife and the natural environment.

Let us say "NO" to artificial barriers, tunnels, canals and similar concrete constructions that have irreparable negative effects on the rivers and because of which the unique natural flora and fauna of the Krupa river may permanently disappear.
