Freedom for Devin, who took a stand for humanity!
In 2016 a young man named Devin went to Northern Syria (Rojava) to defend humanity. It was during a time of cruel attacks by ISIS (”Islamic State”/Daesh) against the people living in the region.
Devin, a Dutch Kurd, decided to take a stand of action against the cruelty of ISIS. The brutality with which ISIS operated, and to some extend still do, is well known all over the world. In every country, the scenes of most brutal executions and people forced to flee their homes were shown. A lot of civilians were murdered or injured by these attacks.
As an internationalist Devin went to the People Protection Units (YPG) and TOOK A STAND FOR HUMANITY! He decided to be a part of the YPG´s Tactical Medical Unit (TMU) as a volunteer, especially during the battle for the control of the Tabqa Dam. He was a part of the unit for about six months. The duties of the Medical Units are to help injured people, fighters against ISIS as well as civilians.
After six months he travelled back home to The Netherlands. Shortly after his arrival, he was prosecuted and the prosecution charged the Dutch citizen with „preparation to commit murder or manslaughter in Syria and/or Iraq“. They strengthen their argument with the help of only a few Facebook photos on which Devin carries a gun.
Intentionally early on in the process, Devin declared that he had never participated in armed conflict. The medical volunteers had to carry guns, in case of an attack for safety reasons. The only use of this weapon was for protection, not to participate in battle.
Moreover the prosecution has not been able to present any further evidence, that proves the correctness of their statement. Nevertheless a 3-year sentence for the young Dutch Kurd is demanded.
We know, that there is no evidence to be found that will support these accusations. Therefore all charges have to be dropped.
Not only this, but the grounds on which a young father like Devin, who wanted to help the people of Northern Syria/Rojava, are being punished is far from comprehensible. The Netherlands themselves play a part within the NATO-/EU-coalition fighting against ISIS.
All in all we want justice and humanity!
To accomplish this, we need YOUR support. With your signatures we can show Devin and the court that he is not alone. Let us use our voices to put pressure on the court and to take a collective stand towards justice!
