"Recall Dallas Brodie: Stand with Residential School Survivors and Truth & Reconciliation"
The Issue
Stand for Truth, Respect, and Accountability**
We, the undersigned, call for the recall of Dallas Brodie and urge elected officials, community leaders, and members of the public to hold her accountable for statements and actions that have contributed to residential school denialism and caused harm to Residential School and Intergenerational Survivors.
For generations, Indigenous Peoples across Canada have lived with the devastating impacts of the Residential School system and other colonial institutions. The experiences of survivors are documented through survivor testimony, historical records, and the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Efforts to deny, minimize, or cast doubt on these experiences undermine truth, reconciliation, healing, and justice.
As Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members, survivors, descendants, allies, and concerned citizens, we believe that elected officials have a responsibility to uphold truth, demonstrate respect, and foster understanding. Public leaders must not use their positions to spread narratives that diminish the experiences of survivors or create further division and harm.
We are deeply concerned that Dallas Brodie's public comments and actions have:
* Contributed to residential school denialism and misinformation;
* Caused pain and retraumatization for survivors, families, and communities;
* Undermined reconciliation efforts throughout British Columbia and Canada;
* Demonstrated disrespect toward Indigenous Peoples and survivor testimony;
* Eroded public confidence in her ability to serve and represent constituents responsibly.
Why This Matters
Residential school denialism does not exist in isolation. When public figures question or minimize the harms experienced by Indigenous Peoples, it influences how society understands Indigenous history and contemporary realities. Denialism can reinforce harmful stereotypes, perpetuate racism, and undermine public support for reconciliation and Indigenous rights.
These attitudes have real-world consequences. They contribute to environments where discrimination against Indigenous Peoples is normalized and where the ongoing concerns of Indigenous communities are dismissed or ignored. This includes the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+), as well as the experiences of Indigenous LGBTQ2S+ people who continue to face disproportionate levels of violence, discrimination, and marginalization.
When leaders engage in denialism or rhetoric that undermines the truth of Indigenous experiences, they contribute to broader societal attitudes that make it more difficult to address systemic inequities, protect vulnerable community members, and advance meaningful reconciliation. Truth, accountability, and respect are essential foundations for creating safer communities and a more just society for all.
Our Call to Action
We call upon:
1. Relevant authorities to support and pursue all lawful mechanisms available for accountability, including recall where applicable.
2. Elected officials and public leaders to publicly reject residential school denialism and affirm their commitment to truth and reconciliation.
3. Community organizations, Indigenous Nations, and local governments to stand in solidarity with survivors and their families.
4. Members of the public to support truth, reconciliation, and respectful leadership by signing and sharing this petition.
Closing Statement:
Residential School Survivors and Intergenerational Survivors have courageously shared their stories despite decades of silence, trauma, and injustice. Their experiences deserve to be honored, not questioned or dismissed.
We stand with survivors, families, Indigenous Nations, and future generations in affirming that truth matters, survivors matter, and accountability matters.
By signing this petition, we call for the recall of Dallas Brodie and for leadership that respects survivors, supports reconciliation, and upholds the truth of Indigenous experiences.
