RECALL COUNCIL MEMBER JOHN PERKINS

RECALL COUNCIL MEMBER JOHN PERKINS
The Issue
Following John Perkis’ vote to approve $150 billion in bonds and incentives for a hyperscale AI data center project, residents of Independence’s First District successfully gathered enough signatures from First District voters to place the question of recalling Councilman John Perkins on the ballot. Every signature submitted was collected from First District residents and verified by the Jackson County Election Board.
We have recently been made aware that former Mayor Eileen Weir, a Fourth District resident, has created an online petition in support of Councilman Perkins. Because anyone can sign an online petition and individuals can submit responses using multiple email addresses, we have decided to create an online version as well to allow residents and supporters to show where they stand.
From the beginning, this effort has been about giving residents a voice. The certified recall petition demonstrated that many residents wanted the opportunity to decide if John Perkins should still represent them. The recall effort is not just about one vote. It is about accountability, representation, and ensuring elected officials remain responsive to the people they serve.
While the certified petition was prompted by Councilman Perkins’ vote to support a massive tax abatement from a hyperscale AI data center project, many residents shared broader concerns during the petition drive. These included frustration over deteriorating infrastructure of our bridges, the Englewood Overlay project, the failed solar farm that cost the city millions, and personal experiences with what they viewed as dismissive and unprofessional treatment from their elected representative.
We invite residents and supporters to join us in solidarity as we continue advocating for accountable leadership and a government that listens to the people it represents. This movement has always been about giving people a voice, and we look forward to letting voters decide the future of First District representation.
