The Issue

The rec center has always been more than just a building to me; it's been a home. Over the years, it has served as a safe haven, a place to meet friends, stay active, and grow. My connection to the rec runs deep, and I can't imagine being without it just because I've turned 18. 💔

For many youths, the rec center plays a vital role in their lives. It offers a positive environment filled with opportunities to engage in sports, educational programs, and to form lasting friendships. At a time when young people are facing numerous challenges, from navigating their final high school years to planning for their future, the importance of having a supportive community space cannot be overstated.

Current policy stops access for individuals once they turn 18. However, this age restriction overlooks the unique needs of 18 and 19-year-olds, who are often still seeking structure and support as they transition into adulthood. Research indicates that community centers like the rec can have a profound impact on mental health and social development; limiting access may inadvertently push young adults away from positive community engagement.

Allowing access to the rec center until the age of 19 is a simple yet effective change. It would support the personal development and well-being of young adults by providing them with a continued safe space to learn, grow, and socialize. By extending the age limit, we are investing in the future of our community and showing that we value the importance of nurturing our youth through crucial transitional years.

Join me in advocating for change. Let's work together to extend the age limit for rec center access to 19, ensuring that more young people can benefit from all the amazing opportunities and experiences it offers. Sign the petition today and help keep the rec a welcoming place for all young adults.
