To: Public Works Director, City of Minneapolis Timothy Sexton; Ward 7 Council Member Katie Cashman:
We, the undersigned residents and concerned individuals of the Loring Park neighborhood and beyond, respectfully request the reconstruction and replacement of the playground previously located on the Loring Greenway. The removal of this vital community resource has created a significant void for families, children, and schools in our area. Its replacement should be prioritized to benefit the entire community.
Background
For over 20 years, the Loring Greenway playground was more than just a play area—it was a cherished space where children could safely play, socialize, and grow. Families and caregivers gathered there to connect, fostering relationships and a strong sense of community in the heart of our urban environment. Local schools also used this playground regularly as part of their outdoor programming, further highlighting its importance as a shared community resource.
However, safety issues stemming from years of insufficient maintenance by the City of Minneapolis led to the playground’s urgent removal. While ensuring public safety was necessary, the lack of upkeep over time undermined the community's ability to enjoy and preserve this essential space. Moreover, the decision to remove the playground was made without prior consultation, leaving families and schools without a suitable replacement.
Why This Playground Matters
A Gathering Space for Families: The Loring Greenway playground was a central hub where parents, caregivers, and children could build connections and a sense of belonging. Its absence is deeply felt.
Safe and Accessible Play: The playground provided an inclusive environment where children of all ages and abilities could engage in physical, social, and emotional development. The lack of a comparable facility in the immediate vicinity disproportionately impacts families with young children.
A Resource for Local Schools: Many schools in the area relied on the Loring Greenway playground for outdoor activities, recess, and physical education. Its removal has left these schools scrambling for alternatives, disrupting their ability to provide quality outdoor experiences for students.
Community Well-Being: Playgrounds are vital to urban life, offering spaces for exercise, relaxation, and social interaction. The removal of this playground limits access to these essential benefits, reducing the overall livability of our neighborhood.
Community Engagement Concerns: The decision to remove the playground without engaging the local community is troubling. Input from those who rely on such spaces—families, schools, and caregivers—should have been sought before making this impactful change.
Our Request
We respectfully ask the City of Minneapolis Public Works Department to take the following actions:
- Rebuild the Playground: Replace the Loring Greenway playground with a new, safe, accessible, and age-appropriate play structure that maintains the design integrity of the Greenway. The design process should incorporate input from local families, schools, and other stakeholders.
- Engage the Community: Implement a transparent community engagement process, including meetings, surveys, and other outreach methods, to ensure residents' voices are heard in decisions about public spaces.
- Restore Safe Recreational Access: Prioritize the development of a safe, enjoyable, and convenient space for play and community interaction in Loring Park.
We urge the City of Minneapolis to act promptly to restore this essential community asset. A new playground will strengthen neighborhood bonds, support local schools, improve the well-being of children and families, and enhance the livability of our urban environment.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. We look forward to your response and are hopeful for a positive resolution.
