Rebuild Sprayberry High School

Rebuild Sprayberry High School
The Issue
There are so many things that Sprayberry HS needs but in the end what it really needs is a main building that matches, and is equitable, with the other high schools in the area. Go look at Pope, Walton, Lassiter, Kell and Wheeler and those schools are basically brand new, have everything you would ever want at a high school and when you drive by them and have kids there you are really proud of what you see. Walk inside, and you marvel at just how nice it is, some of the best in the city, Cobb County has done well.
On the flip side, you don't even have to get inside Sprayberry to see that it is old, to see the crumbling asphalt, the mishmash paint job on the outside and the 1970's facade that just screams "out of date". Now just like homes, sometimes the outside doesnt tell the whole story and the inside is nice but not here, inside the school it is an out of date relic that is falling apart, leaking water, growing mold and makes you feel depressed that your kids have to go there. This is unacceptable in such a nice area of town. The kids are embarrassed, the parents are fed up, community pride is at its lowest level.
Why is Sprayberry left to crumble? Why has it been ignored? A lot of the community that I have met over the last month feel it is the demographics, I am not ready to go that far but when you look at the demographics of the other East Cobb Schools its hard not to think we are the red headed step child of the area. Walton gets new buildings, new properties, new everything, eminent domain and we get a can of paint and a pat on the back. Looks bad!
Now I must say it's going to be hard to argue against this when we have had the following Cobb County School Board expenditures over the last 8 years:
Wheeler High - complete rebuild of main building (21.1 million), new main gym(20 mil), new theater
Pope - New buildings, new main gym, new performing arts center
Walton - Complete 48 million main building rebuild with Performing Arts Center - this doesn't speak of the eminent domain purchase of 3 million for the land for a new softball and athletic center which we don't know the cost yet. Unbelievable!
Lassiter - new gym, new theater upgrade etc etc
Sprayberry - no new gym, no new buildings, crumbling infrastructure
Now Sprayberry opened in 1973, Walton in 1975, Pope in 1987 and Lassiter in 1980. Wheeler, which I attended, opened in 1965 and it needed the rebuild bad, now Sprayberry does as well. The school sits on the busiest road of any of Cobb County's high schools. It should be the gold standard for your county but it is just an outdated mess. Its time for change!Guys we cannot accomplish this without the full cooperation of the elementary and middle school community so we will need to involve as many people as possible. The reason why the other schools get more is because they have better advocacy groups getting it done. We have to do it as well.
