Rebuild Nottoway as a Memorial, Not for Profit

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on the State of Louisiana, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the National Park Service to halt any reconstruction or commercialization of the Nottoway Plantation and instead acquire and transform the site into a national memorial dedicated to the lives and legacies of the more than 150 enslaved African people who lived, labored, and died there.

WHY THIS MATTERS:
Nottoway Plantation, one of the largest remaining antebellum mansions in the South, was built and sustained through the brutal exploitation of Black bodies. It has historically been used as a luxury wedding venue and resort—glorifying white wealth and romanticizing a period of racial terror.

Now, with the plantation closed and reportedly undergoing reconstruction, we have a powerful opportunity to stop its return as a profit-making tourist site and instead restore dignity, truth, and justice to the space.

OUR DEMANDS:
Immediate halt to all rebuilding or reopening plans that commercialize or whitewash the site.
Acquisition by the State of Louisiana or the Federal Government to preserve the site in public trust.
Transformation of Nottoway into a memorial or museum led by historians, cultural workers, and descendants of enslaved people.
No further weddings, parties, or luxury experiences on land where human beings were tortured and sold.
Transparent involvement of Black communities in the planning, vision, and stewardship of the space.
WHAT WE WANT TO SEE:
Imagine this space as a powerful center of education, memory, and justice—a place where students can learn the full history of slavery, where descendants can mourn and honor their ancestors, and where the public can confront the real legacy of racial violence in America.

We cannot allow plantations like Nottoway to be rebuilt as playgrounds for profit while erasing the suffering that made them possible.

We demand truth. We demand justice. We demand preservation with purpose.

SIGN NOW to demand that the State of Louisiana and the federal government **protect Nottoway from commercialization and enshrine it as a national memorial for all descendants of the enslaved.
