Rebuild Hubba Hideout

Rebuild Hubba Hideout
The Issue
Sign the petition to build a skatepark at Embarcadero Plaza, on the former site of Hubba Hideout, the legendary skate spot.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubba_Hideout
Opportunity
Skateboarding is a sport whose cultural artifacts are at constant threat of removal from outdoor spaces. Hubba Hideout is one such extinct space. Can it be rebuilt?
Issue
The skateboarding community celebrates San Francisco as a historic center — despite a tumultuous relationship with other community groups. These groups have rationale concerns.
Skate spots are prone to: noise, potential for injury, and property destruction. Property caretakers may respond with signage, skate-stoppers, and/or security. In extreme cases, a property owner may decide to remove the obstacle altogether.
Hubba Hideout was destroyed in 2011.
Proposal
[Assumption] Active parks decrease vagrancy. By introducing leisure, social, or recreation to our public spaces, we enable positive lifestyles.
[Challenge] How might we introduce a new stream of activity to the Embarcadero? Rebuild a historic outdoor sport landmark. Celebrate our city’s counterculture. Bring back Hubba Hideout.
Next Steps
Voices. Gauge interest <<< we are here.
Organize. Gather more voices.
Promote. Enable public support.
Fundraise. If we want it, we buy it.
Design. From an experienced planner.
Build. With an experienced builder.
Celebrate, maintain, and skate.

Risks
1) The original Hubba Hideout enabled illicit activity. A successful reconstruction honors the function of the walkway and obstacle. And solves for visibility, better activating the space within the plaza.
2) The plaza is a privately owned space. How might we respect ownership while achieving mutual benefit to community and property owner?
