Rebuild Harbor Road, Restore the Mill Pond!

Rebuild Harbor Road, Restore the Mill Pond!
The Issue
Nine months ago, on August 19, 2024, a major storm with catastrophic flooding led to the collapse of Harbor Road, a major thoroughfare in the Village of Head of the Harbor and Stony Brook, Long Island, and the emptying of the community's beloved Mill Pond into the Long Island Sound. Since then, the Town of Brookhaven and the Ward Melville Heritage Organization have been locked in a stalemate as to who owns the road and dam and is responsible for its repair. As far as we know, there is no resolution in sight. In the meantime, the road continues to disintegrate, the pond is a mud pit, and a major thoroughfare in the community is completely inaccessible. We are residents of the community who are imploring Suffolk County, the Town of Brookhaven, and the Ward Melville Heritage Organization to devise a plan to rebuild Harbor Road and restore the Mill Pond. Beyond the cultural and historical significance of losing the pond - it has been around since the 1800s - the collapse of a major thoroughfare in the neighborhood has led to dangerous driving conditions and delayed response times for emergency vehicles, which can mean the difference between life and death, or a house saved and a house destroyed. And given the unstable, deteriorating state of the ground and road, another big storm could cause even more catastrophic damage. We ask that you please sign this petition to stand with the communities of Stony Brook and Head of the Harbor in demanding that Suffolk County, the Town of Brookhaven, and the Ward Melville Heritage Organization end this gridlock and find a way to fix this hazard, without further delay. This needs to be treated as the emergency it is. **Please note that all donations made through this petition go to the change.org website. They do not contribute to our community group or to the restoration of the pond or the rebuilding of the road in any capacity. Thank you!**
