The issue

I've been a resident of Upper Moutere for the past 45 years, witnessing many changes in our community and roads. Every day, I travel to Richmond for work and have always cherished the journey. However, the recent decision to decrease the speed limits on our roads from 100 to 80kph has been troubling. While safety is paramount, the current limits are overly restrictive and not entirely justified for the entirety of our roads.

The reduction of speed limits to 80kph is reasonable around the village core, providing enhanced safety for residents and visitors alike. Nonetheless, the extended reduction spanning all the way to Appleby and to Lower Moutere imposes unnecessary limitations on drivers. A more balanced approach would be setting the speed limit at 90kph for these stretches, a speed that balances safety with efficiency, considering the road conditions and traffic flow.

Statistics from road safety studies show that while lower speeds can reduce accident severity, the design and nature of the road should determine appropriate limits, not a one-size-fits-all approach. For instance, broader and straighter sections can handle higher speeds safely when drivers are alert and rules are followed.

Moreover, many drivers rely on these roads for daily commutes, and the increased travel time, albeit slight, adds up significantly over long periods. It's vital that we reach a compromise that respects both the concerns of safety and the practical needs of those who travel these roads regularly.

Let's encourage the authorities to revisit the recent changes and consider adjusting the speed limits accordingly. A 90kph limit, except through the village, would ensure that the roads remain safe without causing undue inconvenience.

Sign this petition to support a reevaluation of our speed limits, ensuring they reflect both the safety needs and daily realities of our community.
