The Issue

In Coventry, CT, many families chose to plant their roots here primarily because of the outstanding schools. The exceptional programming and curriculum have not only helped our students succeed academically but have also maintained high home values. The strong educational foundation this district provides took a decade to build, and it can all dissipate with one poorly-calculated budget decision.

Recently, the town council decided to reduce the budget for the board of education $765,000, which eliminates essential programming in arts and music, challenge and enrichment opportunities, social studies, guidance counselors, and sports. These are not just extracurricular activities but fundamental components that shape well-rounded, successful students. They are the pillars that support both academic success and personal growth in our children.

There is a viable solution that does not compromise our children's education. The town council can reallocate their budget to restore these essential programs by sharing resources with the board of education. By merging finance departments, IT services, and custodial services, the council can realize significant savings. In addition the town council can return the $163,000 the state is going to fund in excess grant.

This collaborative approach ensures that cutting vital educational programs is not the solution to budgeting constraints. It lessens redundancy and optimizes resource use, which is beneficial not just for the educational institutions but for the entire Coventry community.

The future of our children and the prosperity of our community hang in the balance. A single fiscal decision can either propel our district forward or set it back by a decade. We implore the Coventry Town Council to reevaluate and reallocate the budget in favor of sustaining and enhancing our schools' programming.

Sign this petition to urge the Coventry Town Council to prioritize our children’s education and the future of our community by reallocating the budget back to the board of education.
