Martin Millmore started this petition to Reading Borough Council

Union Street in Reading has been known locally as Smelly Alley for many years, due to the historic presence of many Butchers, Grocers and Fishmongers. In fact, if you asked a Reading resident to go to Union Street, they would be unlikely to know where you mean, but Smelly Alley is instantly recognisable. However, this week the last of the traditional businesses, The Smelly Alley Fish Company, closed down. And with the closing of the fragrant shops comes the very real risk of losing the name. Why would future generations refer to a street of vape shops and mobile phone accessory stores as Smelly Alley? Union Street will become just another bland side street with no novelty or uniqueness.

Let's keep some of Reading's history. Some of its humour and uniqueness. Let's officially rename Union Street to Smelly Alley to show how proud we are of our town and its quirky past. History isn't all about ancient things like the Abbey Quarter, it's also about the prison, the 3Bs, and funny little streets like Smelly Alley.

Changing a street name needs council approval, and they'll only do it if there is public support. So sign the petition to encourage Reading Borough Council to preserve the name and preserve our culture.
