Re-think 8 Story Apartment Buildings in the Aud Neighbourhood

Re-think 8 Story Apartment Buildings in the Aud Neighbourhood
The Issue
A group of neighbours in the Auditorium neighbourhood is concerned about proposed changes to Kitchener’s Official Plan which would re-classify the permissible use of parts of the neighbourhood between Weber and Lydia Streets and therefore permit 6-8 story buildings in these areas where previously buildings of only 3-stories or 11 metres were permitted.
We are concerned that this level of intensification and development will put a significant strain on the existing infrastructure of the neighbourhood, increase traffic, and therefore decrease pedestrian safety, (particularly in the two school zones) and negatively affect the two designated Cultural Heritage Areas in our neighbourhood.
Our group recognizes the housing shortage in Kitchener and the need for affordable housing, but believes that these needs can be addressed through more gentle development such as 3-storey multi-unit residences, duplexes, triplexes and garden flats. Our group believes that more intensive development is more appropriate along the major arterial roads such as Weber and Ottawa streets where transit access and existing infrastructure are better equipped to handle such development.
We will be presenting to the planning committee of Kitchener city council on June 1, 2026 and will ask council to maintain the 3-storey, 11-metre building limit where it currently exists. If you support our position, please sign the petition.
