Re-evaluate Phillip Hunter Gersbach's Minuscule Bond

Re-evaluate Phillip Hunter Gersbach's Minuscule Bond
The Issue
For months, Phillip Hunter Gersbach has been inflicting abuse on his girlfriend—our close friend—and we’ve lived in growing fear that his violent behavior would escalate. We have warned that it was only a matter of time before someone lost their life. Tragically, that day has come.
Hunter Gersbach shot and killed an unarmed man, Jefferey Arriola, in cold blood late Wednesday night. Witness accounts indicate that six shots were fired, with a deliberate pause between them—so that Hunter could exit his vehicle before continuing the assault. Despite this, he is attempting to invoke “self-defense.” Yet, in a phone call to our mutual friend immediately after the incident, and whilst still in a hysterical and panicked state, there was absolutely no mention of self-defense whatsoever. Hunter seems to have simply lost control of his temper, combined with being "f****ed up on Xanax," in his own words. There was no credible threat—just unchecked rage and a loaded weapon.
To our horror, the justice system has responded with leniency. Hunter was granted a mere $15,000 bail, meaning his parents, Phil and Wendy Gersbach, only needed to post $1,500 to set him free pending trial. Meanwhile, the community mourns a life lost. Jefferey was loved and cherished deeply by so many, and spent his last moments defending the honor of someone he cared about.
Concerns are growing that his familial connection to law enforcement—specifically, an uncle who serves as a sheriff in the local jurisdiction—may be influencing this deeply flawed process. It is unacceptable for our community to live in fear while a known abuser and now confirmed killer walks freely among us.
We are calling on the public, the media, and the justice system to demand accountability. We must not allow privilege or personal connections to shield a violent man from the consequences of his actions. We demand justice for Jefferey. No more silence. No more walking on eggshells. Angelina County deserves safety, transparency, and justice.
RIP Jefferey Arriola🖤
