We Oppose the Bolton High School and Alexandria Middle Magnet School Merger

To the members of the Rapides Parish School Board,
We the undersigned vehemently object to the combining of Alexandria Middle Magnet School with Bolton High School. The long tradition and rigorous standards set by Bolton High School over its history have earned it a place of esteem in most academic circles. We believe that the combination of the middle school students with the high school on the same campus would harm the high school and not benefit the middle school.
Changing the location of the middle school students will not affect their poverty level, their reading level, their behavior, or the overall effectiveness of administration or faculty. The change in location will hamper the potential growth of Bolton High School which has benefitted from gaining a strong new principal, an award winning school counselor, some excellent new faculty members, and a brand new football program lead by an excellent coach and mentor to the children. BoIton has made improvements with the attendance and drop-out rate.
It is our suggestion that Alexandria Middle Magnet School be granted the same opportunity to grow with the best leadership and faculty without throwing the students into a high school environment too soon. It is our firm belief that the population of Bolton High School will grow and be blessed in all endeavors because of the school’s staff and faculty because of the strong parent, alumni, and community support.
Many students come to Bolton High School even though they are zoned for other schools due to the academic reputation and we hope to continue to attract scholars from all over the parish. Even so, there are those who are zoned for Bolton High School and choose to attend Bolton High School because we are very proud of what the school does for the Garden District neighborhood. We are proud of its legacy and its contributions to our community over the years.
The people who live in the Garden District are continually improving our diverse neighborhood with the restoration of historic homes, community-building activities, and fundraisers. As a community it is also felt that the combination of our neighborhood high school with the middle school is an unjust disservice to our people. It would stifle our revitalization.
Please consider the long term effects that this merger would have upon our community and the children. Keep a separate middle school and high school in our urban community. We love our area and our children.
