OPEN Fairfax County Schools for Full-Time In-Person Instruction with an Online Option

Fairfax County, Va has cultivated a reputation for many years as one of the top Public School systems in the nation. Yet the FCPS response and preparation of plans for the next school year has been tone-deaf and extremely disappointing. This highly coveted and well-funded school system of nearly 200,000 students has let both children and parents down in a huge way during the last quarter of the 2019-2020 school year and appears poised to compound the damage already caused through its proposals for the return to school year 2020-2021.

When Covid-19 struck, many schools across the nation shut their doors. At that time, little was known about the risk, so it was understandable to keep our kids out of harm's way. But 4 months into the virus, there is data that shows that the benefits of sending kids to school far outweighs the risk.

The American Academy of Pediatrics states: "Lengthy time away from school and associated interruption of supportive services often results in social isolation, making it difficult for schools to identify and address important learning deficits as well as child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance use, depression, and suicidal ideation."

Besides emotional issues, many families are forced into economic hardship if one parent is to stay home to teach. Those in underserved communities will be put in the position of leaving their kids at home unattended because of the likelihood of single parent homes or because of working multiple jobs, which can put their kids in danger and further behind at school. The proposed learning plans for 2020-2021 school year are both inferior and will create additional inequities. Students cannot possibly meet all requirements with 40-80% instruction. Our FCPS students will be much farther behind their peers with many other states and VA counties (CT, MI, TX) returning full time to the classroom. Furthermore, high schoolers will suffer significantly with AP and IB classes because they cannot attain the needed instruction with 54-108 hours versus the traditional 135 hours of per subject instruction.

Our children deserve much better than this and we must stand together on their behalf to demand better. FCPS must provide an option for five-day, full-time, in-person education of students, along with an online option. Only by doing this can the school system truly provide all families with workable options to educate students, while giving families the ability to choose the pathway that works for their situation.

In a county with a population of approximately 1.14 million people, we have seen 509 deaths from COVID (.0005 percent). In over 1000 day care centers in VA, we have had one case since March. Healthcare workers have just a 3% risk of infection and they have a higher likelihoodof exposure. So there is no reason according to scientific data as to why we can't return to school full time.

Please sign this if you are interested in your child(ren) back into the classroom full-time, receiving the education that they deserve in an environment that is so important to the health and stability of so many children in our community!
