Josiah Huggins started this petition to Governor Ralph S. Northam

While it can be argued that the restrictions put in place to minimize the spread of COVID 19 in the commonwealth of Virginia are effective to that end, there is considerable 'collateral damage' caused by those same restrictions that could cost more lives than they preserve.  Suicides have increased as a result of the mandated isolation.  Domestic abuse reporting will decrease (while abuse increases) due to schools being one of the primary ways these situations are identified.  Wearing of masks is demonstrated to have damaging psychological effects on elementary school children. Unemployment and poverty will increase.  Early detection of other life threatening diseases (cancer, for example) will decrease, leaving conditions undetected until it is too late due to the curtailment of medical services.  As much as we can commend the Virginia leadership for taking swift measures to curtail the spread of the virus, it is not clear they are considering the cost.  COVID restrictions should be lifted immediately and replaced by recommendations and best practices.  Funding can be shifted to provide additional services for those in the most vulnerable demographics to allow businesses and schools to reopen.  Allow citizens  and business owners to decide for themselves if the risks outweigh the cost.  It is important to protect all citizens of Virginia, but causing greater hardship and suffering than that which restrictions attempt to protect from is not the right solution.
