Reform Content and Design of School TextBooks
The Issue
Honorable Sir / Madam,
We are glad to state that very important steps have been taken by you regarding Indian education, under which a circular has been issued by you in which special attention has been given to three main things.
- Removing references to un-historical facts and distortions about our national heroes from the textbooks
- Ensuring equal or proportionate references to all periods of Indian History.
- Highlighting the role of great historic women heroes of the national level.
In this context, I/we have done a thorough study of India's history. And I am very sorry to say that, those who have done historical work for the national interest at the grassroots level and have brought about social change have neither been included in the NCERT books nor in the State education books. The irony of this country is that still, we are unable to present the works and efforts of our main visionaries in a satisfactory way, or, in some cases, not at all. And those who have been presented are presented very fragmented and adulterated. We urge you that our country's very important superheroes and superheroines be given a place in NCERT and state's SCERT books so that our young children will get the power to work for the country and they can contribute to the progress of the country with morality.
I am hereby describing very important superheroes and I hope that you will definitely be attentive to this.
- Baba Saheb Dr. B R Ambedkar
He is the architect of the Constitution of India. It is very important to describe him in the books as the nation builder of this country.
It is also very important to teach about Dr. B R Ambedkar as an Educationist, Economist, Socialist, and Anthropologist as well. - Savitribai Phule
The lady who opened India's first school for girls. It is very important to pay very special attention to the hardships she faced when she started educating girls. - Mahatma Jyotiba Phule
An unsung who made a very important contribution in relation to education and has made a very important contribution in removing the superstition, hypocrisy, and evil rituals of this country. - Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj
The man who gave the first reservation to everyone in his time, giving respect to people of all castes and religions and removing hypocrisy, superstition, and other evils. - Ramabai Ambedkar
There has been a very important contribution of mother Ramabai Ambedkar. She sacrificed her four children for this country and has contributed very much to the upliftment of crores of underprivileged people. - Uda Devi
She was a ferocious warrior in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 who fought against the British East India Company. She never got the recognition she deserved just because she belonged to a lower caste. - Jhalkari Bai
She too played an important role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and was a prominent advisor to the queen, Rani of Jhansi. - Periyar E.V. Ramasamy
He was a social activist and politician who started the Self-Respect Movement and Dravidar Kazhagam. He rebelled against gender and caste inequality in Tamil Nadu. - Saint Gadge Maharaj
He was a mendicant-saint and social reformer. He lived in voluntary poverty and wandered to different villages promoting social justice, initiating reforms, especially related to sanitation. - Samraat Ashoka
He was the emperor of the Maurya Dynasty who ruled almost all of the Indian subcontinent. He promoted the message of peace and spread Buddhism across ancient Asia. - Ahilyabai Holkar
She was the hereditary noble Sardar of the Maratha Empire. She personally led armies into battle. She was also a great pioneer and builder of temples and Dharmashalas throughout India. - Birsa Munda
He was a tribal freedom fighter, a religious leader, and a folk hero who belonged to the Munda tribe. He spearheaded a tribal religious millenarian movement that arose in the Bengal Presidency.
Some prominent historical facts that need to be shed some light upon, in the educational system –
Hool Kranti Day / Santhal Rebellion: June 30, 1855
It was the 1st fight for Independence against the British. The tribals of Jharkhand lead by Sido and Kanhu, blown up the rebellion against the English rule in Bhoganadi of Santhal
Pargana. In Hazaribagh, the leadership was Lubia Manjhi, Bass Manjhi and Arjun Manjhi.
Battle of Plassey, June 23, 1757, & Battle of Bhima Koregaon, January 1, 1818
The original Indian Soldiers who won the Battle of Plassey belonged to the Dusadh cast and those who fought the Battle of Koregaon were Mahars both the casts were untouchable. Thus the war of liberation started by the Dusadhas was carried out in Koregaon by the Mahars. Dusadha in the Bengal Army and the Mahars in the Bombay Army were the main parts of the Army due to their warrior nature.
Also, it is very important to mention that The Gautam Buddha has been presented very wrongly in NCERT books. We request you to refer Dr. B R Ambedkar's books "Buddha and His Dhamma" and "Karl Marx or Buddha" in this regard. If we put these things in the school children, it will build them a very strong personality with high moral character. We have described all these great personalities in detail. Therefore, you are kindly requested to pay attention to them.
Yours truly
