Raising the Bar: The Role of Eligibility Standards in Responsible Governance

Raising the Bar: The Role of Eligibility Standards in Responsible Governance
The Issue
In today’s politics, we’re in dire need of leaders who have integrity and competence. That’s why we should prioritize strict credential checks for future candidates. This way, citizens can see if candidates have the right skills, knowledge, and ethics to serve the country and its people effectively. By implementing a law that instructs all candidates must go through a strict credential review process, we promote honesty and responsibility in government. Ultimately, this creates a government that aligns with what people expect and need.
Imposing strict credential requirements would be beneficial in terms of better quality of governance. Only when the candidates possess the required education, experience, and qualification will they not carry at least a high probability of incompetent or unqualified persons at positions of power; accordingly, it may lead to better policy making, improved delivery of public service, and increased public trust in government institutions. Stringent credential requirements can also help deter corruption and abuse of power. This is because a person holding any office who possesses qualification will be less likely to succumb to the demands of taking bribes, nepotism, or any form of political biases. Such requirements also ward off ulteriorly motivated individuals who may seek elective offices because they are unable to meet the requirements prescribed by the credentials. Examples like Rodrigo Duterte facing pending cases for his alleged crimes linked to human rights violations during his reign war on drugs (2016-2022). The ICC is investigating his involvement in crimes against citizens while Duterte denies his wrongdoing and refuses to cooperate, withdrawing from the ICC in 2019.
Former President Rodrigo Duterte must not be allowed to run for candidacy due to his pending ICC investigation about his human right violations allowing his candidacy increases the accountability and risks the chance for impunity. According to (Argosino, 2024) the leader of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) in the Philippines, Apollo Quiboloy has significant pending legal charges, including fraud, money laundering, coercion, and sex trafficking. Quiboloy is an example of a candidate who has several chargers but who is still permitted to file and run for government. Many believe that candidates who are charged of such serious crimes must to be prohibited from running because doing so could compromise the public's trust in democratic institutions and the rule of law. In order to maintain the integrity of the Philippine political system, tighter rules governing candidates with serious legal problems are required. This case highlights crucial concerns about accountability and the moral standards expected of public servants. And on Alice Guo, who has been charged with crimes linked to illegal offshore gambling operations and accused of being a Chinese spy, plans to run for office again, raising concerns about national security and issues in the country's election laws. Her lawyer, Stephen David, said she would file her candidacy on Tuesday, the last day of the week-long filing period for next year’s midterm elections. (Beltran, 2024). She should not run for candidacy again because her case has damaged her credibility and public trust. The critics of rigorous credential requirements may argue that such requirements might limit access to public office for people from disadvantaged backgrounds. However, this concern can best be addressed through the particular targeting of outreach and education programs to prepare underrepresented groups in challenge to or rigour of public service. What is also worthy of note, is that the ends are aimed at excluding no one but qualified public servants elected for the office.
The role of credentials in responsible governance is crucial for ensuring transparency, accountability, and trust in public administration. Here are some key laws and regulations that highlight this role:
Regulatory Governance:
- Definition: Regulatory governance refers to the rules and processes that guide how decisions are made and how governments exercise their powers and responsibilities

- Certain positions may require specific knowledge or skills that are typically gained through formal education or professional experience. For example, roles in finance, law, or public health might benefit from candidates with relevant degrees or certifications.
Campaign Leverage:
- Strong credentials can be a significant advantage during a campaign, providing talking points and helping to differentiate a candidate from their opponents.
In conclusion, it is essential to strictly enforce credentials for candidates seeking public office in order to guarantee the qualifications and moral character of our elected leaders. By establishing clear criteria and standards, we can protect the public interest and encourage good governance. This policy will assist to prevent unqualified persons from acquiring power, hence increasing faith in our democratic institutions. Furthermore, demanding credentials will inspire prospective politicians to further their education and professional development, resulting in a more competent and effective administration. As a result, strict credential implementation must be prioritized as a foundational component of a strong and responsible democracy.
