Our coming generation is filled with concern about the current housing crisis. With little support for the homeless, the future of this nation seems bleak. The connection between low wages and homelessness cannot be ignored. As per a report by National Low Income Housing Coalition, an individual must earn at least $22.96 per hour to afford a modest two-bedroom rental home in the U.S., far above federal minimum wage (National Low Income Housing Coalition, 2020). This wage gap has led to an increase in homelessness with over half a million people on any given night experiencing homelessness in America (U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, 2019). Furthermore, mortality rates among homeless individuals are alarmingly high due to lack of access to healthcare and exposure to harsh living conditions (National Health Care for the Homeless Council, 2019). We need immediate action from our policymakers - we call upon them to raise wages as a direct response towards combating rising homelessness and associated mortality rates.
