Raise wages for waitstaff and delivery drivers in North Carolina

The Issue

In North Carolina, hardworking waiters, waitresses, and delivery drivers grapple with the harsh reality of earning just $3.50 an hour under the state’s split wage system. This hourly wage, reminiscent of a bygone era, feels barbaric and outdated. Throughout the bustling summer months, when tourists flock in, tips can sometimes bridge the gap, offering a semblance of financial relief. However, this financial buffer is anything but reliable. As the vibrant tourist season fades post-Labor Day, so do the tips, leaving these essential workers to struggle when their tips plummet from a potential $700 a week to a mere $250.

This dramatic drop is not only demoralizing but places undue hardships on individuals trying to make ends meet, support their families, and build a stable future. The current system forces them to rely on unpredictable tips to reach barely livable earnings. No one should live in a constant state of financial uncertainty or have to worry about having enough to cover basic needs because of an outdated wage system.

Neighboring states have taken steps to amend their wage structures to more fairly compensate workers. It is high time North Carolina did the same. By ensuring a more fair and equitable wage, we can not only help alleviate poverty among lower-wage employees but also boost morale and productivity within the workforce.

We propose a revision of the minimum wage laws for tipped workers in North Carolina to guarantee a fair and liveable base wage, regardless of tips. Moving towards a wage floor not less than $12  an hour would help secure financial stability and dignity for all workers, reflecting a more reasonable and humane standard.

As citizens, business owners, and patrons, let us stand together to advocate for a change that reflects fairness and dignity for all workers in North Carolina. By signing this petition, you are supporting a movement towards economic justice and sending a strong message to our legislators that it’s time for change. Please sign this petition today to help make a difference in the lives of these vital workers.
