Raise the wages — Equity for Part Time Faculty at The New School
The Issue
Part-time faculty members at The New School, members of ACT-UAW Local 7902, voted last week to authorize a strike, after failing to make progress in their negotiations on a new contract with the New School administration. Faculty have been working under successive pressure and over extensively with a stagnant 2014 contract, even as inflation has made an imminent effect on society.
Faculty have stated that the university administration makes it difficult for faculty to qualify for essentials such as health insurance while cutting back on teaching assignments to hinder faculty from reaching the necessary qualifications to be considered or be paid as an essential member of TNS.
How long the strike is unknown. The university appears to be preparing for the possibility of a strike that may extend into the Spring. In a Google Doc linked from the New School website, the administration suggested that faculty might decide to teach their classes over Zoom since it implies that staff wont be crossing a physical picket line. It also urges faculty to find ways to continue their students’ education during the strike. Please sign the petition to show your support for PTF members whom make up approximately 9 out of 10 members at The New School faculty.
The New School needs to be held accountable for giving livable wages to staff members who make the community what it is and help students achieve success through conceptual thinking, fostering a positive environment through limited means, and making the college experience what it is. Please help promote the stark inequities in the mission of the school which includes statements that foster “social justice”, “diversity”, and “progressive values “. The New School, as with any platform that is outdated and inept to change has to alter the outdated policies of the past and allow for change within the college experience for faculty and students—alike. Please sign this petition to raise the wages for PTF and allow a platform for change. Social justice is not just a construct; it is a reality that needs to be enforced by faculty members and students alike. Through change, there can be success. Accountability is the first step.
