Raise the Standard: Reform Cosmetology Education in Virginia

Raise the Standard: Reform Cosmetology Education in Virginia
The Issue
In September 2024, Virginia reduced cosmetology training hours from 1,500 to 1,000 — leaving students with less time to master haircutting, color, and styling before entering the industry. Graduates are struggling, employers are retraining, and the standard of our profession is at risk. We’re calling on the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology to raise training hours to 1,600, strengthen hands-on learning, and make State Board exam feedback transparent. Sign today to help protect the future of our craft and ensure every stylist gets the education they deserve. ✂️ Full Petition Description: Who is impacted? Cosmetology students, salon owners, and licensed professionals across Virginia are feeling the effects of a broken system. Since the state reduced required training hours from 1,500 to 1,000 in September 2024, new graduates are leaving school without the hands-on skills they need to succeed in real salons — struggling with basic haircutting, color formulation, and styling techniques. Salon owners are spending thousands retraining new hires, while students, who have already invested tens of thousands of dollars in their education, are left frustrated, underprepared, and questioning the value of their license. What’s at stake? If nothing changes, the quality and credibility of Virginia’s cosmetology industry will continue to decline. Students will keep graduating without the skills to thrive, employers will carry the cost of extra training, and clients will lose confidence in our profession. But if we act now, we can fix this. We’re calling on the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology to strengthen education by restoring 1,600 training hours, adding real salon training, improving color and haircutting education, and giving students access to their full State Board exam results so they know exactly where to improve. Together, we can raise the standard for every future stylist. Why now? This issue can’t wait. The impact of the reduced hours is already being felt in classrooms and salons across the state. Every year that passes means another wave of graduates entering the field unprepared — and another setback for our industry. By standing together and signing this petition, we can show the Virginia Board that beauty professionals are united in demanding real, practical reform. Let’s make sure future stylists are confident, capable, and proud to represent Virginia’s beauty industry
