70 MPH Speed Limit on M-39 (Southfield Freeway)

70 MPH Speed Limit on M-39 (Southfield Freeway)
The Issue
The Speed Limit on M-39 (Southfield Freeway) is 55 MPH (as of 8/4/18). The flow of traffic usually leads to the majority of drivers traveling closer to 70 MPH. This can lead to a difference of at least 15 MPH between drivers. Such a difference in speeds is not safe and typically leads to a higher chance of accidents. A Speed Limit of 55 MPH has not done the job of reducing that difference in drivers' speeds. At the beginning of 2018, the Michigan State Police stated that they would be cracking down on speeding on M-39 (Southfield Freeway), and that did not do the job. Speed Limits are set based on how fast the majority of drivers go. The majority of drivers are already going 70 MPH and we need to adjust the Speed Limit to reflect that. Reducing the difference in speed between fast drivers and slow drivers will reduce the chances of accidents. Fast drivers are not going slower. Therefore, slow drivers need to go faster. This is how we reduce that speed difference between drivers. We need a Speed Limit of 70 MPH on M-39 (Southfield Freeway).
