Raise the per-household dog limit in Orange Cove to 10

Raise the per-household dog limit in Orange Cove to 10
The Issue
I have six dogs, and my aunt has two. Most of my dogs are seniors, and they are like my children. The city of Orange Cove has recently put me in a difficult situation, forcing me to consider either giving up my dogs or relocating. This is particularly disheartening since I have been living in my current residence for over a year without any issues. However, trouble arose when I decided to voice my concerns during a city council meeting about increasing water rates and the lack of drinkable water. This feels unjust because there are several others in our town who not only own more than three dogs but allow them to roam freely around the neighborhood, contributing to the growing number of strays.
Currently, Orange Cove's ordinance places a restriction on pet owners by capping the number of dogs per household at three. This limitation doesn't take into account responsible pet owners who ensure their pets are well cared for, with ample space and a clean living environment. Raising the dog limit to 10 for responsible owners would mitigate the unfair application of this rule, and benefit both families and dogs in the community.
A revised ordinance could include clear and enforceable conditions, such as maintaining a clean yard and ensuring that pets do not become a nuisance to neighbors. By focusing on the responsible care of our pets, we can address public health and safety concerns, while also respecting the family bond many of us share with our dogs.
Increasing the limit would also help reduce the number of pets being surrendered or illegally kept in households. According to data from reputable animal welfare organizations, owner surrenders often lead to overcrowded shelters and, sadly, euthanization. By allowing more dogs per household, we can ease this burden on our community's animal control systems.
Moreover, cities similar in size to Fresno have successfully implemented less restrictive pet ownership policies. Their experiences can serve as a model for our local government, demonstrating that a balance between regulation and compassion is achievable.
I urge the Orange Cove City Council to consider the well-being of its residents and their beloved pets by raising the dog limit per household to 10 for responsible owners, with appropriate conditions outlined in a new ordinance. This change will not only benefit pet-loving households but will also demonstrate the city's commitment to humane practices and community welfare.
Please join me in calling for the Orange Cove City Council to update this ordinance by signing this petition. Together, we can create a more inclusive environment for our cherished companions.
