Raise the Minimum Drinking Age in the United States to 25

Raise the Minimum Drinking Age in the United States to 25
The Issue
To: U.S. Congress, State Legislatures, and the President of the United States
Protect Public Health and Safety by Raising the Legal Drinking Age to 25
We, the undersigned, call upon federal and state lawmakers to take immediate action to raise the minimum legal drinking age in the United States from 21 to 25.
Why This Change is Needed
Protecting Brain Development: Scientific research confirms that the human brain continues to develop until the mid-20s. Alcohol consumption before this critical period of brain maturation can negatively impact cognitive abilities, decision-making skills, and impulse control. By raising the drinking age to 25, we can help ensure young adults reach full neurological development before engaging in potentially harmful behaviors.
Reducing Alcohol-Related Accidents and Fatalities: Alcohol remains a leading cause of traffic fatalities and injuries among young adults. While the implementation of the 21-year-old drinking age has reduced these incidents, extending the limit to 25 would further decrease alcohol-related deaths and improve public safety.
Preventing Alcohol Dependency: Studies show that individuals who start drinking at a younger age are more likely to develop alcohol use disorders. Raising the drinking age to 25 would delay the onset of alcohol use and reduce the risk of lifelong addiction.
Improving Public Health: Excessive alcohol consumption among young adults contributes to long-term health issues, including liver disease, cardiovascular problems, and mental health disorders. Delaying access to alcohol can mitigate these risks and promote healthier lifestyles.
Supporting Law Enforcement and Public Resources: Alcohol-related crimes and emergencies place a significant burden on law enforcement, healthcare systems, and local communities. Raising the drinking age would decrease these incidents, allowing public resources to be used more effectively.
What We Are Asking For
We urge lawmakers to:
Amend Federal Legislation to incentivize states to raise the minimum legal drinking age to 25 through funding mechanisms, similar to the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984.
Implement Education Campaigns to inform the public about the benefits of raising the drinking age and the science supporting this change.
Strengthen Enforcement of laws aimed at reducing underage drinking to ensure compliance and deter illegal alcohol sales.
