Raise the business mileage allowance from 45p to 65p per mile

The Issue

We’re calling on HM Treasury and HMRC to increase the Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) from 45p to 65p per mile, and to review the outdated 10,000-mile cap.

This is urgently needed for people working in construction and similar industries, where using a personal vehicle for work is essential.

The current mileage allowance of 45p per mile hasn’t changed since 2011. In that time, the cost of running a vehicle has increased dramatically. Fuel is more expensive. Insurance has gone up. Servicing, tyres, tax – everything costs more. Meanwhile, the state of the UK’s roads has declined, leading to greater wear and tear on our cars and vans.

According to the AA, the true cost of running a car in the UK is now over 60p per mile. That doesn’t take into account larger vehicles, tools or equipment, or the extra pressure that comes from regularly using a vehicle for work purposes.

This affects a lot of people, but it’s particularly tough on those of us working in construction. We travel between sites, attend meetings, carry out inspections, collect materials – the list goes on. It’s not unusual for someone in our industry to do 20,000 to 30,000 business miles in a year. But under the current rules, only the first 10,000 miles are reimbursed at the 45p rate. After that, it drops to just 25p per mile – which often doesn’t even cover fuel.

We’re asking for the following:

  • Increase the mileage allowance from 45p to 65p per mile, to reflect the real costs of driving in 2025.
  • Review the 10,000-mile threshold, which penalises people who rely heavily on their vehicles for work.
  • Recognise the impact of poor road conditions on vehicle maintenance and repair costs.

This isn’t about making a profit – it’s about fairness. Right now, many workers are effectively subsidising their employers or the government just to do their jobs. That’s not right, and it needs to change.

If you agree that the mileage allowance should reflect the real cost of motoring, especially for people in construction and other high-mileage roles, please sign and share this petition.
