Raise the age of consent to 18 nationwide
The Issue
When I was just 16 years old, a 28-year-old teacher manipulated me into a sexual relationship. Despite the crime committed against me, my father was powerless to seek justice on my behalf. At that time, in 1983, there was no legal recourse for statutory rape under the existing age of consent laws, which left me and countless others in vulnerable positions.
Our current laws fail to adequately protect young people from sexual exploitation and manipulation by adults who hold positions of power and influence. It's alarming that the age of consent laws vary significantly across states, with some set as low as 16 or even 14 years old. This discrepancy enables predators to exploit legal loopholes and causes confusion about what constitutes legal consent across state lines.
Raising the age of consent to 18 nationwide will safeguard our youth by providing a clear, consistent legal standard that recognizes the developmental differences between teenagers and adults. It will also close the gaps that allow individuals in positions of influence to take advantage of teenagers who may not yet have the emotional maturity to give informed consent.
Additionally, aligning the age of consent with adult legal responsibilities, such as voting and joining the military, acknowledges a more holistic understanding of maturity and consent. This alignment reinforces that entering into adult relationships should coincide with the age at which one is considered to have full adult responsibilities and rights.
This change would send a strong message to perpetrators that society is serious about protecting its young people, and it would provide a stronger legal framework for prosecuting those who exploit teenagers.
Let's come together to protect future generations from the traumas that I and many others have endured. Please sign this petition urging lawmakers to take action and raise the age of consent to 18 across the United States. Together, we can create a safer environment for all young people to grow and thrive.
