The Issue

At the age of 16, I believed I was capable of making decisions that would affect my life. However, reflecting on those years allows me to see just how vulnerable I truly was. Having a legal system that permits adults to engage in relationships with individuals as young as 16 suggests that a teenager possesses the maturity and perspective of an adult—a notion that is not only misleading but also dangerous.

The age of consent in British Columbia is currently set at 16. While there are exceptions in place to protect 16-year-olds from being taken advantage of by adults, no one seems to know about them. This leads to youth believing that they can’t seek justice. Not to mention, the fact remains that many exploitative individuals choose to ignore these nuances, insisting "16 is legal" as their justification. This flaw in our legislation permits adults, who may be significantly older, to have relations with individuals who are still children. This has lead to a staggering number of individuals who don’t come forward about harm done to them, and exploitative situations, because they have believed it to be okay. Too many people are uneducated on the nuances of the law.

If photos of 16-year-olds are considered child pornography, this recognition of their vulnerability is clear, yet it starkly contrasts with the allowances made for adult relationships with them. How can it be that we recognize someone as a child in legal terms, only to turn around and permit their involvement in adult situations?

An increase in the age of consent will provide the protection young people need to develop at their own pace, free from adult pressures and exploitation. Raising the age to at least 18 aligns British Columbia with other jurisdictions and affirms our commitment to safeguarding the youth.

Statistics reveal that teenagers are not only still in a crucial phase of development but are also heavily influenced by social and external pressures. By raising the age, we acknowledge these realities and take a stand against adults who might otherwise exploit this developmental stage for personal gain.

We need our lawmakers to amend this law, to prioritize the protection of our young citizens, and to ensure that they transition into adulthood without being prematurely burdened by adult relationships. The change might seem small, but its impact could be profound, helping protect our teenagers from exploitation and emotional harm.

Sign this petition to urge the government of British Columbia to reevaluate and raise the age of consent, reinforcing the safety and security of our youth.
