Raise SSI assets limits to reflect modern standards

The Issue

As a dedicated social workers, we have witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by millions of Americans who rely on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for their basic needs. It is heartbreaking to see that the very program designed to alleviate poverty, instead repeatedly throws vulnerable people into cirisis with its outdated regulations that do not align with today's economic realities.

The rules governing Supplemental Security Income (SSI) has not been updated since 1989, leaving the asset limit stuck at $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples. As a result, SSI recipients are penalized for saving even small amounts, often facing benefit suspension or loss for modest financial progress.

More than 7 million Americans, including people with disabilities and older adults with little or no income, rely on SSI to meet basic needs.  The current asset limits force beneficiaries to live with constant financial insecurity, unable to save for emergencies such as medical expenses, home repairs, or unexpected crises.

This policy traps people in poverty rather than helping them escape it.

Modernizing SSI’s asset limits is a practical and compassionate step that would empower millions of vulnerable Americans with greater financial stability, independence, and dignity. Allowing recipients to save responsibly without fear of losing critical benefits. Recipients could better manage emergencies, reduce reliance on crisis assistance, and participate more fully in local economies.

Lawmakers have a responsibility to update these outdated rules and ensure SSI truly supports those it was designed to protect.

We urge Congress to act now. Please sign this petition to demand a fair and necessary update to SSI asset limits and help create a path toward financial security for millions of Americans.
