Raise rates for detention and layover for truck drivers.
The Issue
As a trucker, every hour spent waiting at a shipper or receiver without proper compensation is disheartening. Our community of truckers, who are the backbone of the nation’s economy, deserve to be fairly compensated for their time and effort. Currently, many truckers face extended hours under detention without any increase in pay, and layovers that disrupt our schedules are not rewarded at a fair rate.
In the United States, trucks move about 72.5% of the nation’s freight by weight, according to the American Trucking Associations. Without us, goods would not make it to store shelves, yet our time is undervalued, particularly when we are detained at a shipper or receiver or left without a load during a layover. This practice not only affects our earnings but also our quality of life, increasing stress and time away from our families.
The current industry standard for detention and layover pay is not sufficient. Detention pay typically kicks in only after two hours, and the rate is much lower than what is fair for delaying a trucker’s schedule. Similarly, layover pay fails to compensate for lost time and potential earnings. This needs to change to ensure that truckers are treated with the respect and fairness we deserve.
By raising the rates for detention and layover pay, we can acknowledge the true value of a trucker's time. A proposed solution could be setting a fixed rate for detention that recognizes every hour spent waiting, not just after the first few hours. Additionally, increasing layover pay to reflect the earnings lost during delays will better support those who keep America moving.
With your support, we can take a stand for fair compensation. Our goal is to approach trucking associations, logistics companies, and legislative bodies with a unified voice calling for industry reform. This reform will not only benefit truckers, but also improve the efficiency and morale within the transportation industry, leading to better service deliveries.
Sign this petition to help us achieve fair pay for the countless hours truckers spend away from their families and on the road. Let’s fight together for the dignity and respect that every trucker rightfully earns.
