For decades, my family and I lived in a pagdi building in Andheri East, Mumbai, sharing our lives and dreams with 20 other tenants. We were a close-knit community, co-existing since the 1960s, when life seemed simpler. Fast forward to the 2000s, our landlord, who was always a part of our lives, suddenly passed away. It was a moment of mourning, not just for a property owner but for someone who felt like an extended part of our families.

However, this unfortunate event catapulted us into a world of legal complications, revealing the rot and corruption deeply entrenched in our system. The legal heirs of the landlord stopped collecting rent, which included our water charges and maintenance — a critical component of our daily lives. Repeated attempts to contact them went unanswered, leaving us in limbo.

To tackle this, we formed the Tenants Association in 2005, attempting to bring some order and representation to our situation. Despite our collective efforts, we faced massive hurdles at every step because of systemic corruption in the judiciary and administration. Just when we thought we were taking steps towards resolving the issues, we encountered a system that seemed rigged against ordinary citizens like us.

The very institutions meant to uphold justice and protect the rights of the common people are marred with inefficiencies and corruption, leading to prolonged legal battles and a sense of hopelessness. This is not just our story but a grim reality faced by thousands, if not millions, across India whose voices remain unheard due to this broken system.

India, a nation built on the foundation of justice and equality, is fraying at the seams due to these corrupt practices. Justice delayed is justice denied, and it’s high time we raise our voices collectively to demand a significant change in the system. We need transparency, accountability, and an assurance that justice will not be a privilege for a few but a right for everyone.
