Raise Local Housing Allowance in line with inflation

The Issue

I am a private tenant, I have been for 10 years. Due to The Bank of England raising it's interest rates, my rent has now gone up more than I can afford but it's due to no fault of my landlord and I have no additional means to cover this shortfall. I know this problem is widespread is affecting the majority of private tenants on a low wage. The Local Housing Allowance was frozen by this Conservative Government in 2019, and they have voted to keep it frozen, instead of at the very least, raising the Local Housing Allowance in line with inflation. This is forcing millions of private sector tenants, many with children already struggling with the cost of living crisis and having to choose between heating or eating, now having to face the prospect of losing their homes and being unable to rent another due to bad debt or defaults on their rent record. The LHA no longer reflects the lowest 30th centile of rents and by keeping the LHA rate frozen at the 2019 rate, it is resulting in a significant shortfall between a tenant’s rent and the level of housing benefit they receive. Surely the Secretary of State is in breach of his obligations under Article 14 read with Article 1 Protocol 1 and/or Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Article 14 ensures freedom from discrimination. Article 1, Protocol 1 protects a person’s right to enjoy their property peacefully. Article 8 protects a person’s  right to respect for their private and family life and their home.  We need to force the government to reverse their decision to freeze the LGA and ensure private tenants can continue to feel safe in their rental properties. Thank you
