The Issue

In British Columbia, individuals relying on provincial disability benefits face a dire financial reality. With an average payout of just $1,500 per month, including only $500 designated for rent, those living with disabilities are forced to make impossible choices. As someone deeply involved with disability resources, I've spoken to countless people who must decide between essential needs: rent, food, or crucial medication. This decision is heartbreaking and simply unacceptable.

To put this challenge into perspective, consider this: according to the Government of Canada’s low-income measure, a single person living alone would need at least $2,000 per month just to approach the bare minimum required to live above the poverty line. With rising living costs, particularly in urban areas like Vancouver, this amount doesn't begin to cover basic expenses, let alone leave room for emergencies or medical costs unexpected and unaccounted for.

In 2022, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives reported that the average rent in BC increased by 23%, while disability payments remained stagnant. Such disparities exacerbate the financial strain on some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

A realistic adjustment of the disability support system is long overdue. To ensure that persons with disabilities are afforded a dignified life, we are calling upon the provincial government to raise the monthly benefits to at least $2,500, with a dedicated housing component of at least $1,000 to better reflect current rental market conditions.

This increase is not merely a want but a need to combat poverty and uphold the rights and dignity of individuals who deserve our support. Leaving the current system unchanged perpetuates a cycle of poverty that not only affects those on disability but also the community at large through higher healthcare and emergency shelter costs.

We urge British Columbians to stand together for this important cause. By signing this petition, you are advocating for necessary change that can transform lives and provide hope to many. Please add your name to push for this crucial adjustment in disability support income and be a voice for those who are often unheard.
