My granddaughter has had an incredibly challenging time navigating the school system in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Despite the many marked-up statements and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) designed to support students like her, she has only fallen behind educationally. Year after year, the school system benefits financially from enrolling children in special education programs, yet critical services are not adequately provided.

Albuquerque, with a population approaching 600,000, is currently served by a single school district, making it the 37th largest in the United States by enrollment. This situation creates a bottleneck of resources and attention, diluting the quality of education and support provided to each student, particularly those with special needs. It's time for change.

By dividing Albuquerque into at least two school districts, we can allocate resources more effectively, provide personalized attention, and ensure that every student receives the support they deserve. This division would allow for more manageable district sizes and targeted educational strategies that cater precisely to the community's needs.

Data from other cities with similar population sizes that have multiple school districts show improvement in educational outcomes and increased satisfaction among students, parents, and teachers. For instance, Louisville, Kentucky, and Las Vegas, Nevada, both have multiple school districts and manifest better resource distribution and specialized support systems.

It's crucial to provide an environment where every child, especially those in special education, can thrive and reach their full potential without being sidelined by an overwhelmed system. We must demand better for them.
