The Issue
Every day, as a local resident of Ardingly, I witness the same alarming situation: cars speeding through our village at over 40mph in a 30mph area. It is a terrifying ordeal to even cross the road with my 15-month-old daughter. This petition is a call to action to prevent the inevitable tragedy that could result from unchecked speeding and reckless driving through our community.
The roads of Ardingly and surrounding areas are dangerous at the current 30mph, which cars regularly do not follow. On more than one occasion, I have witnessed people being hit by vehicles and animals suffering the same fate. This isn't just a problem for me but for every resident who has to precariously navigate these conditions daily.
We need West Sussex County Council to recognize the potential hazards that speeding poses to the safety of all road users. Implementing more effective traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps, traffic lights, zebra crossings or speed cameras, could be the difference between life and death. Other villages have successfully reduced speeding and improved safety with such interventions, and it is time we did the same.
According to the Department for Transport's Reported Road Casualties in Great Britain, speeding was a contributory factor in 12% of all accidents, with a higher proportion in rural areas like ours. The World Health Organization highlights that reducing speed is key to preventing traffic injuries and deaths, a sobering reminder of the ramifications of inaction. Communities that have taken this approach have reported not only fewer accidents but also a considerable increase in the quality of life for residents. People should not have to be wary every time they step outside their door or live in fear of a fatal accident happening to someone in their community.
