Raise Awareness About the Pollution in the Merrimack River

The Issue

I am a resident of Merrimac, MA, and like many others here, I like to swim in our local river. However, the current state of the Merrimack River is alarming and unsafe for both people and animals due to excessive trash and sewage overflow. This isn't just an issue for those who enjoy this natural resource; it's a public health concern that affects us all.

The pollution levels have reached such high levels that swimming has become a risk rather than a leisure activity. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that sewage overflows are one of the leading sources of water quality impairment in the United States. These overflows can contain harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi which pose serious health risks to humans and wildlife alike.

Moreover, littering has also contributed significantly to this problem. It not only affects aquatic life but also disrupts recreational activities like boating or fishing. According to Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup data from 2019, volunteers picked up more than 20 million pieces of trash worldwide from coasts alone.

We must act now before it's too late! We need your help in raising awareness about this pressing issue so we can work together towards cleaner waters for our community. By signing this petition you're taking a stand against pollution in our beloved Merrimack River - let's make it safe again for everyone! Sign today!
