The minimum wage at Augustana College for student workers is $9.25 an hour, which is lower than the $12.00 an hour wage required for most businesses in Illinois. This is allowed under a provision in the 2020 Illinois minimum wage law which states that student workers are exempt from the law and fall under federal minimum wage law. However, this does not mean that being paid less than minimum wage should be justified. Many student workers on campus do not have access to transportation which would otherwise allow them to work an off-campus job that would pay them more for the same amount of labor. International Students are unable to work off-campus because of visa limitations. As such, International Students make up a disproportionate amount of student workers because the College understands they have no other option. Augustana college should have more respect for the workers that keep this campus running.
