Seniors that do not have a pension even though they worked hard all their lives, rely on the old age security OAS, and Canada pension plan CPP. And individuals whose OAS and CPP combined still leaves them below the poverty line. That’s where the GIS comes in. The guaranteed income supplement is only available to those seniors who don’t receive enough for food and shelter from their OAS and CPP. None of these supports that were supposed to be there to provide security for seniors over the age of 65 do that because the $$ amount is far too low! It has not kept pace with inflation over the years an especially now since COVID and all the other factors that have caused the cost of living to skyrocket!!  The amount that the seniors receive is so low, so minima, that it’s not enough to pay for food and housing, let alone for anything else like medicine, dental care,  Eye care, eyeglasses hearing aids etc. it’s not enough for them to buy the necessities of life such as shoes, a coat, depends etc.
It’s really a crying shame that everything else has gone up ⬆️ everything else has increased ⬆️but not the OAS or the CPP or the GIS!! Our seniors are forced to live in poverty after helping build Canada and after working hard and contributing to Canadian society all their lives to make Canada the great country that it is.
It’s really shocking that the government has not come to the aid of seniors many of whom died in care facilities during COVID! So our seniors are either dying a slow death from not having enough money to eat properly or buy their medicine or get their teeth fixed, and some ending up homeless because they don’t have enough to pay the high⬆️ cost of rent that keeps rising ⬆️and rising⬆️.

It’s a real stain on Canada!! It almost seems that the government wants everyone over 65 to just die off from COVID or starvation and poverty! The federal government and the provincial government need to increase the OAS, CPP, and the GIS And there needs to be additional supports in place for those over 65. Because once you’re 65 you’re not eligible to go to welfare for help! There is no place to turn to for help! There is no security net!! The Canadian government should be ashamed of itself!!
