The recent violent, wrongful, and tragic deaths of many Black Americans, including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery have caused an outpouring of support for members of our community, especially parents and students of color. As parents and stakeholders in the Radnor community, we want all of our children to grow up in a world with empathy and equality, where injustice is recognized and actively addressed. We believe that early intervention is critical in shaping compassionate societies that value equality for all people no matter their gender, ethnicity, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation. Because racism is largely a systemic and structural issue, our school system is a key setting for this important education and work to be done. To that end, we ask that you support this petition to have the Radnor Township School District (RTSD) create a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) advisory committee.

We propose that the advisory committee will:

  • Consist of experts on DEI in educational settings, School District faculty and staff, and community stakeholders such as parent representatives who will provide recommendations, support, and guidance for K-12 DEI initiatives.
  • Include members that reflect the ethnic and racial diversity of our community.
  • Work alongside teachers, principals and the RTSD School Board to tailor efforts for our Radnor students.
  • Create developmentally appropriate programming for grades K-12 on diversity, inclusion, racism, justice, equity, and privilege.
  • Assist the RTSD in reviewing its faculty and administration recruitment, hiring, promotion, and retention practices to increase diverse representation.

The purpose of this committee would be to work with the Radnor Township School Board to assess how to implement age-appropriate DEI education into the curriculum at all grade levels.

At the most recent RTSD Curriculum Committee meeting held on June 16, 2020, the Committee shared the past and continuing DEI efforts in the individual schools. The Committee also read aloud letters from approximately a dozen parents calling for the School District to re-examine and expand their efforts in the DEI space. Some Committee members suggested the RTSD consider several of the efforts we are advocating for in this petition, including the inclusion of DEI materials in the school curriculum and increased community engagement and parental involvement around this topic. We believe these efforts would benefit the entire student body, faculty, and School District. We are asking you to join us in signing this petition so that the RTSD understands just how important this work is for our community.
