Racism at Chang Bar, Krabi, Thailand against Indians

The Issue

We were 16 Indians who wanted to visit Chang Bar in Krabi, Thailand but were denied entry in the bar post 9.30 PM without an entry fee of THB 500 because, "Indians sit here and don't pay".

While from the get go this discrimination is unacceptable, we STILL explained the situation to the security and manager and ensured them that we were a group of tourists who were willing and capable to pay, assured them that we'd bring them business giving examples of other places in the past few days we have frequented. They were not willing to negotiate. They just refused entry to ONLY Indians without an entry fee and in front of us, they welcomed groups of other ethnicities.

After the situation, we searched on internet to find several perspectives both explaining why Thai behaved as such and otherwise surfaced. Some learning that a lot of the Indian tourists need to take is to be more polite with members in the service industry, but it does not mean it's stereotyped. Stereotypes are dangerous and the fact that the managers and security of this particular Chang Bar in Krabi refused to rationalize despite calm conversation makes it imperative to let them know how dangerous their stereotypes are.

It's important to gather together, voice out to Chang Bar at Krabi that not all tourists that come from India just "occupy space" just like we don't think that all Thai bars are racists.

It's time to break the stereotype and make Changes Bar at Ao-Nang Krabi realise their mistake.
