Train horns are an important and safety critical component of trains, providing auditory warnings at level crossings and other locations. They function to alert people to the presence of a train, often traveling at speeds that make stopping impossible within the train driver's line of sight. Unfortunately, train horns all too easily blend into the common and every day soundtrack of modern urban living. In order to make trains safer, their horns should better cut through the sounds of the suburbs, they should be more unique, more distinct, and more traditional Spanish folk. I propose that all trains be fitted with La Cucaracha horns, to be loudly sounded off approaching level crossings at all times of the day or night. Distinctive and unmistakable, these new horns would increase safety on and around the railway, making sure everyone was aware of approaching trains. Safety is of course the highest priority of Queensland Rail, quite rightly, and this change would be a change for the better.
