QUMSA started this petition to Queen's University

In 2019, Queen’s University signed contracts with two companies, iFlyTek and Hikvision, both of which are implicated for their involvement in the surveillance of Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang region of China.

This issue was identified by a Queen’s Student and written about in the Queen’s Journal.

In response to questions about these investments, Queen’s community relations and issues manager said that “Queen’s is very aware  of the broader concerns around national security that have been a  focus of public dialogue regarding relations with China," and that they were not directed to by the federal government to end research partnerships with these companies.

On February 23, 2021, the house of commons voted on a motion, which passed with a vote of 266-0 to declare China’s treatment of Uyghur people a genocide.

If you are unaware of what is happening to the Uyghur peoples, they are being held in what China calls re education camps in order to make them more Chinese, to assimilate into society and to “prevent terrorism”.The atrocities that occur in these camps are abhorrent and won't bee discussed in this petition, but you will be able to find more information in our instagram bio.

What we are now asking is for the Queen’s community to sign our petition, which is also available in our instagram bio and facebook page, in order to show our university that we are unable to accept their investments into companies that are contributing to the genocide of any ethnic group.

The goal of this petition is to get the university to divest from these companies and think further in the future about where they invest money.

This is a cause for all Queen’s students to be united on, regardless of our race or religion, and we look forward to seeing how together, we can pressure the university to divest from companies that are acting as accomplices to genocide.
