[Español]  Mapudungun es el idioma del pueblo-nación Mapuche, que habita en lo que ahora es Chile y Argentina. Solo en Chile, existe un estimado de entre 100 y 200 mil personas que entienden y hablan el mapudungun. En los últimos años, ha habido una creciente presencia del idioma mapuche en medios sociales, evidenciado por la creación de foros, páginas personales y sitios web sobre y en mapudungun[1].

Existen dos instancias similares en las que se está trabajando para la creación de plataformas en mapudungun (enciclopedia Wikipedia y el navegador Mozilla Firefox [2]), por lo que inclusión de Facebook en esta línea sería de mucho beneficio para visibilizar el uso cotidiano del idioma.

Nosotros somos un grupo de personas que promovemos el idioma mapuche en redes sociales, compuesto por hablantes nativos y estudiantes del idioma de distintos ámbitos sociales. Estaríamos dispuestos a trabajar desinteresadamente en que se concrete esta iniciativa revisando las oraciones y vocabulario tecnológico así como generando las traducciones (ya sea neologismos o adaptaciones) necesarias.

Pero para que esto sea posible, necesitamos que Facebook facilite las herramientas necesarias para comenzar nuestro trabajo de traducción.

[English] Mapudungun is the language spoken by the Mapuche Nation, inhabiting what is now Chile and Argentina. Only in Chile there are between 100 and 200 thousand speakers of Mapudungun. In the last years, its presence in social networks is steadily increasing, as shown by new personal webpages and websites in Mapudungun [1].

We hope that Facebook allows us to translate its interface into Mapudungun in order to promote the daily use of this language. As an example, two other important on-line applications (Wikipedia and Mozilla Firefox) are currently working to generate platforms translated into mapudungun [2].

We are a group of people who promote the Mapuche Language in social networks. There are native speakers of Mapudungun, and also second language students from different social contexts. We are willing to work in order to reach this goal by translating the interface and also by checking the technical vocabulary and expressions (by means of neologisms or adaptations).

But for this to be possible, Facebook should facilitate the tools needed to start this translation work, specifically by allowing Mapudungun to be a language in its translation projects.
