Quartz Hill High School has been home of the rebels since 1964. The schools current academic population consists of 70% white students. This school although producing amazing athletes, artists, and academics has had a long history of internal racism plaguing it’s community. Many students have complained of being bullied for their ethnicity and sexual orientation and have experienced wariness in the face of discrimination from other students. Students have long toted confederate flags on their vehicles and shouted racial slurs at black students and made them feel uncomfortable in their own school. It’s time that we put a stop to the underlying message of racism this mascot further projects unto students. No black or brown or white student should have “rebel pride”. The LA Times has even featured articles against this gross mascot and it’s time Quartz Hill take responsibility and remove it. Please sign this petition to push them in the direction!
