Recently at QASMT, they have brought in an unjust, and unreasonable hat policy. This policy requires students including the senior school to wear hats on the way to school, during breaks, when going from class to class, going home from school, and also to have their hats on them at all times. This is unreasonable as almost the entire way to school for most students is in shade, the majority of the break areas are in shade, the pathways from class to class are in shade, and surprisingly, inside the buildings is in shade. Yet even though a vast majority of our day is under shade, they still claim that we need to wear our hats and have them with us at all times. Also, this hat policy is only being implemented in the third last week of the last term of school, yet for the rest of the year its been unimplemented, and also the current 11s and 12s don't need hats, yet the current 7s, 8s and 10s will when in those grades, which is highly illogical as the sun burns people indiscriminately, but only if they are in direct sunlight. While you could make the argument that UV rays from the sun could be reflected of the ground, which is correct, most of the sunny areas are grass of soil, which reflects around 5% of UV light (UV Daily, 2020), so it would take 20 times the time of exposure to cause comparable damage. Concrete is around twice as reflective, reflecting 10% of UV light, however this still has a minimal effect on the body, and the hat won't even do anything to stop this, as it only blocks light from above. Furthermore the current hat design is incredibly difficult to carry around, as it is bulky and will be destroyed if bent, so even if you decide to carry it around its incredibly difficult to do so. Also due to this, it becomes increasingly likely that a student may have to get a replacement due to the damages to the hat, however these hats are incredibly expensive considering how easily they are damaged. Something else I have noticed about some of the older hats is that they get sun damaged, and start turning a reddish color, which seems kind of questionable considering what the purpose of the hat is. I believe that the ideal solution to these problems is to make the hat an optional choice, so that if students want that small amount of extra protection they can have it, but it is not mandatory. A second solution that is almost as good is to replace the school hat with a cheaper alternative that can be crushed and stuffed in bags without damage, similar to the cap from the sports uniform.
