The Issue

**My name is Rodney I. Riley, CEO and Founder of WattsSafestreetsDC.llc**. Seventeen years ago, my life looked very different. I was caught in a cycle of incarceration and instability, facing the harsh realities that too many young people and returning citizens encounter daily in our communities. I know firsthand the feeling of being trapped by your past, believing that it dictates your future. But I've also experienced the transformative power of second chances.

**Why This Matters**
Today, our cities are in crisis. Too many of our young people are being stripped of their hope, never getting the chance to discover their true purpose in life. Families across our communities grieve for loved ones lost to senseless violence. And for those who have served their time and wish to reintegrate into society, endless barriers stand in their way, making the path to a new life an uphill battle.

Our city cannot simply arrest its way out of these complex challenges. We need a more comprehensive solution that focuses on prevention, intervention, and restoration. Investing in education, providing meaningful opportunities, and offering healing to those in need are vital steps we must take. Empirical evidence shows that community programs that emphasize skills training, mentorship, and mental health support can drastically reduce violence and improve outcomes for at-risk individuals.

**Demand For Change**
We call upon our city leaders, policymakers, community organizations, and every resident committed to change to act boldly. We demand that our city invests in comprehensive violence prevention strategies that not only address the symptoms but also tackle the root causes of violence.

By funding programs that create economic opportunities, support educational initiatives, and provide mental health resources, we can help our young people discover their purpose and potential. These strategies are not only more humane but also more effective than punitive measures.

**Join Our Movement**
We all have a role to play in building a safer, more equitable community. Please sign this petition to urge our city leaders to prioritize investments in what truly matters: our people. Let's put the guns down and pick up purpose. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of countless individuals and families. Every signature counts, and your support can lead to the change our communities desperately need.
