Put more E85 flex fuel stations in Tucson
The Issue
Living in Tucson, Arizona, where we embrace innovation and sustainability, I find myself constantly challenged by the lack of E85 flex fuel stations. As a resident committed to reducing my carbon footprint and supporting renewable energy sources, the inconvenience of having only two E85 stations in town is a significant hurdle. One of these stations is located in Sahuarita, Arizona, which makes it difficult for myself and other Tucsonans to consistently access flex fuels without taking a long trip out of town.
E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, is a more sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Ethanol is a renewable resource made from plant materials, and it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions while supporting local economies and agriculture. As the demand for cleaner energy rises, the infrastructure supporting such fuels must also keep up. Unfortunately, Tucson has fallen behind, leaving residents with limited options and an increased carbon footprint due to longer travel distances to obtain E85.
In states like Minnesota and Illinois, where E85 is widely available, drivers see cost savings and increased vehicle efficiency, and studies from the U.S. Department of Energy support these benefits. Additionally, expanding access to E85 can help Tucson transition toward a greener future, promoting environmental responsibility and innovation within our community.
We are calling on local government officials, fuel companies, and station owners to recognize the growing need for more E85 stations across Tucson.
