The issue

My son suffers from drug-resistant epilepsy coupled with autism, intellectual disability and challenging behaviours.  We've journeyed through 16 different medications, none of which have provided relief. Watching him struggle daily without effective treatment is heart-wrenching, and as a parent, I feel helpless knowing there could be an alternative solution that our healthcare system doesn't yet accommodate.

Drug-resistant epilepsy affects approximately 30% of individuals diagnosed with epilepsy. Many, like my son, show limited to no improvement with traditional treatments. However, evidence supports the efficacy of medicinal cannabis in reducing seizures and improving quality of life in such cases. In Australia, while medicinal cannabis is legal, it's not readily accessible for everyone. For families battling severe health conditions, the financial burden of acquiring unlisted treatments can be overwhelming.

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) in Australia has the power to change this landscape. By listing medicinal cannabis under the PBS, we can provide families like mine with affordable access to this potentially life-changing treatment. Numerous studies, including research from the University of Sydney and other international health bodies, validate the effectiveness of medicinal cannabis for epilepsy, especially in drug-resistant cases.

Including medicinal cannabis in the PBS for drug-resistant epilepsy and other complex medical conditions, such as the challenging behaviours that often occur with autism, would not only alleviate financial burden but also offer hope and improved quality of life for countless Australians. It's time for our healthcare system to recognize the growing body of evidence supporting medicinal cannabis and extend its benefits to those who need it most.

Join me in urging the Australian government to make a change. Stand with us in advocating for the listing of medicinal cannabis on the PBS—because every child deserves the chance for a better life. Sign the petition today and help us pave the way for accessible treatment options for all affected families.
